About the Pet Sustainability Project

Our Mission

The Pet Sustainability Project is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of companion animals while protecting the planet we all share. We believe that Pet care is Earth care, and that animal health, environmental stewardship, and human wellness are inseparable.

Our mission is to elevate pet nutrition, home and yard safety, holistic health practices, and consumer advocacy through evidence-based, independent guidance. We accept no industry funding or sponsorship. Our only allegiance is to science — and to the animals.

Who We Are

The Pet Sustainability Project was founded by holistic veterinarian Dr. Jean Hofve of LittleBigCat.com, and consumer advocate Mollie Morrissette of PoisonedPets.com — two long-time voices for transparency, safety, and integrity in the pet industry.

Together, we bring more than five decades of experience in veterinary medicine, nutrition, and the AAFCO and FDA regulatory policies that the entire pet industry follows in the U.S. and Canada. We have both been Advisors to AAFCO for many years and have earned the respect of both regulators and industry representatives.

We’ve worked inside the system, alongside it, and frequently against it — always in the interest of improving consumer protections and ensuring that pets receive the healthiest, safest, and most environmentally responsible care available.

Our Values

Science

All guidance is grounded in the best available research, without hype, marketing influence, or trends.

Transparency

Consumers deserve honest, accessible information — not obfuscation, greenwashing, or label gymnastics.

Independence

We do not accept money, sponsorships, advertising, or influence from pet food manufacturers or product companies.

Environmental Responsibility

Every choice — from protein sourcing to packaging to yard care — carries ecological consequences. We support solutions that protect pets and the planet.

Whole-istic Perspective

Pet health is shaped not just by food, but by home environment, toxins, stressors, safe products, and safe, effective non-drug therapies. All of these belong in the conversation.

What We Do

  • Advocate for safe, wholesome, nutritious pet food

  • Evaluate pet foods, ingredients, processing, and packaging

  • Promote nutrition that supports both animal health and ecological sustainability

  • Advocate for safe, toxic-free homes, yards, and product choices

  • Provide science-based guidance on holistic and non-drug health therapies

  • Offer independent input to regulators and AAFCO on behalf of consumers and companion animals

  • Create trustworthy, practical resources for pet-loving consumers who want to make healthier choices that will safeguard our future

Why We Exist

Pets bring us extraordinary joy, comfort, and connection — but their health needs, the products we use, and the industries that serve them have significant environmental impacts.

  • Consumers want to do better

  • Manufacturers should do better

  • Regulators must do better

We’re here to shine a bright light into the dark, often deceptive corners of the pet industry — and to offer clear, evidence-based solutions that support vibrant pets, safer homes, and a thriving planet.
